辐射层是恒星内部经由辐射而不是对流的手段向外传递能量的区域，能量以电磁辐射，像是光子，的形式穿越辐射层。在太阳内部，辐射层位于太阳核心和对流层之间，从0.2至0.71太阳半径的区间。

物质在辐射层有很高的密度，光子只能自由旅行很短的距离，就会被吸收或散射成另一个粒子，在这个过程中并且会逐渐转移成较长的波长。由于这个原因，从核心区域离开的γ射线平均要171,000年才能穿越辐射区。在这个范围内，电浆的温度从核心的1,500万K下降，抵达对流层底部时大约是150万K。
