分析化学是开发分析物质成分、结构的方法，使化学成分得以定性和定量，化学结构得以确定。定性分析可以找到样品中有何化学成分；定量分析可以确定这些成分的含量。在分析样品时一般先要想法分离不同的成分。分析化学是化学家最基础的训练之一，化学家在实验技术和基础知识上的训练，皆得力于分析化学。

分析的方式大概可分为两大类，经典方法和仪器分析方法。仪器分析方法使用仪器去测量分析物的物理属性，比如光吸收、荧光、电导等。仪器分析法常使用如电泳、色谱法、场流分级等方法来分离样品。当代分析化学着重仪器分析，常用的分析仪器有几大类，包括原子与分子光谱仪，电化学分析仪器，核磁共振，X光，以及质谱仪。仪器分析之外的分析化学方法，现在统称为古典分析化学。古典方法（也常被称为湿化学方法）常根据颜色，气味，或熔点等来分离样品（比如萃取、沉淀、蒸馏等方法）。这类方法常通过测量重量或体积来做定量分析。

Analytical chemistry studies and uses instruments and methods used to separate, identify, and quantify matter. In practice separation, identification or quantification may constitute the entire analysis or be combined with another method. Separation isolates analytes. Qualitative analysis identifies analytes, while quantitative analysis determines the numerical amount or concentration.
