帆船是船的一种，简单的定义是：以任何材料来操纵风力使船航行的，就叫做帆船。

上述的材料也就是指帆船的｢帆｣；或是可称为｢风帆｣。风帆通常是相当柔软的材质，当有风正对着风帆时，造成了受风面与背风面气压的落差，因此产生强大的推力，风帆会被拉扯向低压的那一边，当帆船需要转向时，可以透过船骨和船舷来控制侧面的力量，让船身稍微倾斜来控制方向。 帆船是奥运的比赛项目之一。

Large sailing vessels that are not ship-rigged may be more precisely referred to by their sail rig, such as schooner, barque (also spelled "bark"), brig, barkentine, brigantine or sloop.
