在水文学中，干流是「河川下游内、对比于支流的主要河段」，即河流系统中最终最主要的河道，故又称为主要河道，或简称主河道。干流和所有支流水系以分水岭为界、所流动的范围，构成集水区，称为流域；而最终流域的水系将汇聚至干流。

依据水文学分类系统，单一流域内的。以史崔勒系统（修正自1945年罗伯特·霍顿所设计的系统）为例，「凡是没有任何支流注入的源流河川为一级河，当两条同等级河相会合后，河川等级数增加一级；若相会两河的等级不同，则会合后的河川等级数仍保持会合前的较高等级数。」在霍顿系统中，流域内的整个干流水体将具有最高等级数；然而，经1957年亚瑟·纽威尔·史崔勒修正后，仅有次高等级数的支流会合后所形成的干流部分河段，将具有最高的河川等级数。

In hydrology, a main stem is "the primary downstream segment of a river, as contrasted to its tributaries". Another common term for the main stem, the final large channel of a riverine system, is the trunk. Water enters the main stem from the river's drainage basin, the land area through which the main stem and its tributaries flow. A drainage basin may also be referred to as a watershed or catchment.
