功率是能量转换或使用的速率，以单位时间的能量大小来表示，即是作功的率。功率的国际标准制单位是瓦特（W），名称是得名于十八世纪的蒸汽引擎设计者詹姆斯·瓦特。灯泡在单位时间内，电能转换为热能及光能的量就可以用功率表示，瓦特数越高表示单位时间用的能力（或电力）越高。

能量转换可以用来作功，功率也是作功的速率。当一个人搬着一重物爬了一层的楼梯，不论他是慢慢的走上楼梯或是快跑上楼梯，对重物作的功是相等的，但若考虑其功率，快跑上楼梯会在较短的时间内对物体作相同大小的功，因此其功率较大。马达的输出功率是其马达产生的转矩及马达角速度的乘积，而车辆前进的功率是轮子上的牵引力及车辆速度的乘积。
