山姆（西恩·潘饰）是个智能障碍者，年过而立，智商却只有七岁，他曾与一个女街友发生一段露水姻缘，生下了一个可爱的小女孩露西（达可达·芬妮饰，婴儿时期由艾儿·芬妮饰），而后这位女街友即行方不明。

山姆身兼父母之职，辛勤地在星巴克打工，在一群身心障碍的朋友帮助下抚养着爱女，并以披头四的名曲《Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds》，将女儿取名为露西（Lucy），露西智力不但正常，甚至可以说是非常聪明，很快发现了父亲与众人的不同，但她却贴心地假装不以为意。
